Level Design

Focus of this blog is to show the development of Bounty’s level

Bounty takes place on an island surrounded on all sides by water. There are 3 separate villages that are found on the island, the townhouse village, the tree village, and the mountain village. Each village will have a different bounty monster. Please see the beginnings of the level creation below.

Below is the original concept for the island. As you can see from the sketch, it was later decided to scale the island down to just the top half of the concept sketch as indicated by the dotted line.

The island was created and modified using Gaia. Gaia is a procedural world generator. I started with a template island from the Gaia pack provided. I then added rivers, mountains, and lakes with the stamps provided to add appeal to the terrain and to manipulate the template to look closer to my original sketch.

Next the texture on the terrain was added using Complete Terrain Shader (CTS). With this shader, I defined the areas of sand, grass, and rock, and applied it to the terrain.

Once the terrain was finished, trees and grass needed to be populated. I added these with a procedural generator called GeNa. GeNa aided in adding the trees/grass in natural clusters on areas of the terrain where they would most likely grow. I then can go in and edit how many trees/grass are in certain areas depending on placement of other objects.

Lastly, I placed the houses, fences, and other assets to create the three villages.
